Prologue, Pt. 1
15 BBY: Theoretical Science and Technology Developement Center (TSTDC), Talus, Corellian System
"Do you ever wonder what's up there?"
"Up where?" Nancy questioned, leaning back in the grass and looking up at the sky.
"Outside the empire, I mean." Adam answered, looking at the planet Tralus, the sister planet of Talus, which they lived upon.
"I guess..." Nancy replied, wondering about this new prospect. Was the Empire alone in the universe? Is this the only universe there is?
"Whoever's up there, do you think we'll ever meet them?" Nancy asked, relaxed.
"I hope so." came the answer. Not from Adam, but from her father James. "Hunny, I'd like to show you something. Would you like to join us, Adam?"
"I'm sorry Dr. Li, My mother would have a fit if I were late for dinner. Maybe another time." Adam replied, getting up.
"I'll see you tomorrow." Nancy said to Adam with a half smile. Both eight-year-olds went their own ways.
"What does it do?" Nancy asked, staring at the contraption, spellbound.
"It compresses space time between two points. Basically, it shortens the distance between two points that an object has to travel." her father replied.
"How does it work?" Nancy inquired, still staring.
"Now, that would take far too long to explain!" James said with a chuckle. "I was hoping to show you what it does... that would take less time, eh?"
Nancy's eyes seemed to light up and, grinning ear to ear, she asked her father to show her. He led her over to a rather large thing that she realized was a gun. James handed her a set of noise-canceling earphones, and James began to explain.
"This is the newest weapon built by this institute, and uses the space-time compression technology I showed you over there... but enough of my dribble, let me show you what it does!" he said, aiming the weapon down the convenient firing range. "Could you turn on that holo-recorder?" he asked, and she complied. "Cover your ears!" he yelled, and she covered her ears with her headphones. James pulled the trigger and with a boom the target downrange suddenly had a large hole in it's middle. The target was automatically replaced with a new one.
"That was without the space-compression mechanism. Watch this!" he yelled, and pressed a button on the aiming display. A very loud whirring came from the weapon, and James pulled the trigger. This time, there was no boom, but there was also no target. Nancy was about to ask what happened, when James put the gun down, pulled off his headphones, and showed her the recording. In the first firing, it was a normal cannon. But in the second firing, the bullet seemed not to come from the barrel, but to start right in front of the target. In fact, the bullet went through a portal beginning within the barrel of the weapon, and ending in front of the target. James' communicator beeped, indicating a call.
"Dr. Li, here. Go ahead" the doctor said into the com, turning away from his daughter.
"Excuse me" the receptionist for the Center said in an airy voice "a transport landed, and there are 5 people here to talk to you. An imperial officer and 4 soldiers in white." she said, unconcerned. James' eyes widened: he knew why they were here, but he didn't know they'd come so soon. No, he must be wrong. They're here to collect the taxes for keeping this place in James' hands, like they always were. He relaxed a bit. "Come along, hunny. We're going to pay our dues."
"Good to see you again, Dr. Li." The officer in grey said in a coo'ing voice with an insincere smirk.
"Captain" the scientist said, acknowledging the enemy's presence. "You're here to collect the tax, correct?"
"Actually, we have other business to discuss." James' eyes widened slightly and his heart froze at the words. The imperial captain saw the body language, and his smirk grew. "Mind showing me to your lab?" Despite the friendly tone of his voice, this was not a question, and James knew it, taking a quick glance at the blaster pistol at the imperial's side. "Follow me."
"What's this?" the captain asked, nodding toward a pressurized, air-tight glass-walled room hexagonal room with a single computer, divided in half by another plate of glass.
"That's where we do experiments involving radiation." James replied, getting sick of answering that question. They'd toured the entire place, and this room was the furthest place into the ground that the facility reached. They stopped outside the room.
"Dr. Li, I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to relinquish control of this facility to the Empire, including all materials related to your space-compression experiments.
"That's not possible." James began, Nancy listening intently. "This is a Private facility: The tax has been paid, I have all my licenses, and the Empire has no authority here." James' stated confidently.
"I knew you'd say that." The Captain said. "Am I to assume that this is your lovely daughter?" The imperial officer said and grabbed Nancy by the arm and pulled her toward him, simultaneously pulling his pistol out and pointed it toward her head. His 4 escorts pointe their rifles at the Scientist, who was about to kill the Officer with his bare hands, but stopped when he saw the other guns come up. "I invite you to change your mind, MISTER Li." The Captain growled, emphasizing James' new qualification.
"Fine, Captain. I'll give you access, just dont shoot. there's no call for violence." James said, half growling, half pleading. "Just give me a moment to revoke my access. If you'll come here, I'll register your fingerprint into the system.", James said with an idea in his head. The officer released the girl, and he, along with his escorts, went inside the Rad. room. The door closed, the room pressurized, and everyone in the glass room, James, the Captain, and the stormtroopers, died within 5 seconds. James had flooded the room with a massive amount of radiation, and Nancy was left with a grudge, no father, and she wondered if this was just a nightmare, or a cruel joke. She slowly came to realize that it wasn't, that she was now alone in the universe.
