Here there be Necros

It is an unusually quiet evening in the large city of Mansona. The sun is just starting to set and the first set of town guards are retiring for the night as the evening watch start their patrol. The streets, normally crowded, are emptying as people head home or to the Tavern for the evening. All seems normal though the town watch can't help but feel something is not right. The temperature seems at least 10 degrees colder than it should be this time of year. And even under all the armor the watch wear they still can't help having shivers and chills. The people in the tavern, normally laughing and getting drunk are much less merry this evening. They rather sit in silence at their tables sipping their ale.

Several hours pass, the feeling of unease still in everyone. Many people get up and leave the tavern, hoping to get to sleep early. The regulars at the tavern talk quietly to one another instead of their usually loud laughter and yelling. The current watch on patrol look forward to their break in the next hour, especially the archers on the city walls. It is than that a lookout spots something in the distance.

It looks small from here but he gasps as he quickly realizes what it must be. A small hoard, maybe 50 men are approaching the city from the north side. That is much too many men for a group of travelers and yet too little for raiders. He wonders what they could be possibly thinking. They are moving at a rather fast pace, jogging it almost seems. How could he have not noticed them approaching before? They aren't as far away as he had thought, surely he would have seen them in the distance sooner.

The lookout realizes they will be approaching the gate in the next 30 minutes or so, he rushes down from his post and confronts the first Guard he sees.

"Men approach the city walls!" he yells towards the guard. "At least 50 from what I can see! They're moving at a fast pace and should be here in the next 30 minutes!" The guard stares at him blankly, as if not realising what he is hearing.

"Are you sure?" the guard finally answers. "This is the largest and most populated city in the land! we are extremely well fortified and protected -- who in their right minds would attack us?"

"Look! Just go and get the day shift of archers and bring them up on the northern walls! Chances are this is a very large group looking for supplies but we cannot be sure." Says the lookout firmly.
The guard nods and sets off to the barracks. The lookout rushes back to his post and looks at the hoard once more. He gasps. They are much closer than they should be by now. Maybe only 4 miles away now. Their jogg has turned to a frantic sprint it seems.

"What fools!" He says aloud. "They will tire their men before they even get here!"

He looks behind him to see 10 archers climb up and take their places on the north wall. They can clearly see the oncoming threat and all look very worried. Sprinting up to a fortified city is not a normal battle strategy...especially when the sprinting starts before the men are even in range of the archers.

A group of 5 guards leave the city and start walking towards the oncoming group. They leave to ask what the men are coming to their city for. The archers on the north wall whisper back and forth to one another, their nervousness is easily seen even from the high perch that the lookout is stationed in.


The hoard is maybe 2 miles away now.


The lookout can easily make out the people that make up the hoard now. Most look like commoners and are dressed simply, some have beaten-looking armor on them and yet others are near naked with their clothing torn. Blood is easily recognizable all over them. The lookout's first guess is that they must need medical treatment...he rethinks this quickly though. They would not be sprinting were they bleeding. The guards approaching the hoard stop. They must see the blood and the fact that the group is still sprinting worries them. Rather than continue forwards they stop where they are, perhaps a quarter mile from the city walls and draw their swords.

The hoard is but a half mile from the walls now.

They approach the guards fast now, hardly any distance between them. The lookout sees one guard step forward a yell "HALT!" clearly.
What happens next is unexpected.

4 men from the hoard rush forward and grab hold of the guard that stepped forward as they make contact, he is forced to the ground. The guard's screams echo out into the city. The rest of the group all go for the 4 remaining guards. At least 5 to a person. The flash of steel and spreading of blood is visible but the guards are outnumbered far too much to fight. They are overpowered and all forced to the ground as they are killed. One guard attempts to retreat but does not get far. 5 men are quickly on his tail and bring him down before he runs more than a few yards. A few slip past the killing and continue on their way to the city gates. The lookout notices they don't wield weapons...

The archers on the wall all yell in surprise at what just happened. One rushes down and alerts the street guards. They start to warn the citizens of the coming attack.

The archers yell in surprise and point in different directions. The lookout looks around and with horror sees that mobs similar to the first are headed towards the city from the South, East, and West as well. The archers try and spread out evenly among the walls. They realize quickly there are not enough of them to provide a good enough defense.




The tavern doors burst open as a 3 guards walk in. "Attention citizens of Mansona! Return to your homes! A coming threat approaches the city walls! Those of you who are able are encouraged to arm themselves and meet in town square for more details. Please remain calm and leave in an orderly fashion. Thank you."

The regulars of the tavern stare back open-mouthed as the guards leave. Among them is Larius Varr.


((Tld;r for those who don't want to read. Zombies is coming, not enough archers to defend well, people are worried, able citizens are "encouraged" to arm themselves and meet in town square.))

"And that's when I snapped his little head off and shoved it up his ass!" Ondel shouted loudly; ale sloshing out of his goblet as he jerked his arm upwards, simulating the sodomy he'd just described. All around him, men equally as drunk laughed and drank, and some even tried to do both at the same time. "That earned me a pouch o' silvers. They tried to screw me over, though. Said the body was too mangled to identify, but I showed them a piece o' me steel and I got my fair bounty you can be sure," He continued before taking a long draft. A stray bead of ale dribbled down his chin and into his hauberk, which he attempted unnsuccessfully to wipe away on the back of his gauntlet.

"Oi, Larius!" Ondel shouted, slamming his goblet down on the counter, sending ale everywhere, "Why so quiet? Tell the lads about that one bounty we took bake in the Vale!"

But before any sort of response could be made, three guards burst into the bar, announcing "Attention citizens of Mansona! Return to your homes! A coming threat approaches the city walls! Those of you who are able are encouraged to arm themselves and meet in town square for more details. Please remain calm and leave in an orderly fashion. Thank you."

A wicked smile spread across Ondel's face as it often did at the promise of bloodshed. "And what's in it for us?" He shouted, perhaps a bit too loudly as he took another drink.

George looked at the man who shouted, and said, "Why, the glory of battle, nimrod! We shall send these vile hell hags back to whence they came!"

Drowning his whiskey, George got up, unsheathed his war hammer, and let loose a loud war cry.

Ondel spat. "The glory o' battle won't buy ye a flagon of red, nor even a pint of beer!" He said, standing and drawing his bastard sword, "But as it so happens, I've not yet taken a life today and I'm a creature o' habit!"

Something about that seemed to light the fire in the other men's booze-filled bellies as well, and they rose in quick succession, drawing their weapons in a glorious display of inebriated bloodlust.

Larius stepped forward and in front of Ondel for a moment. His head barely came up to his brother's shoulders.

"Hold on Ondel..." he said slowly. Let us hang to the back of th' back of the crowd for moment. We should see wha we're up against..."
He said all this while swaying on his feet slightly, he had clearly drunk too much this evening.

"Oi, and let all these other blokes kill the good ones?" Ondel scoffed, clearly unhappy at the idea. Clumsily reaching for his goblet, he downed the rest of his ale before tossing the empty container over a table.

"Aye, have it your way then." Ondel said, testing the edge of his blade with his thumb.

As much of the tavern rush out to town square an unexpected sight greets them. Commoners flee into their homes, the archers on the walls fire arrows out of sight as fast as they can manage. A small mob is gathering in town square. Loud discussion is heard from the tavern.
A frightening noise comes from the city gates. It sounds as if 50 people were all pounding on it at once.

Larius stumbled out of the tavern as others rushed out around him. He mentally sobered up quite a bit as he saw the chaos the city was in. Guards rushed to reinforce the gates with large amounts of wood. The town guards yelled loudly in the city square at the men gathered there. Arrows rained down from the city walls.

Larius approached the town square. As he approached he caught the ending of what the guard was yelling.

"--I repeat. Assist in barricading all gates except for the northern! Numbers are lower there and we will need to fight the undead threat outside of the city in close combat as well as ranged! This does not mean they will be breaching the walls! That is all."

The guard next to him spoke up next. "All right! All of you get to the northern gate unless you are fit to use a bow! They number in the tens of thousands but don't worry -- they fall easily enough. Mind you don't get bitten' though eh?"

Larius stood where he was. He felt the effects of alchohol becoming much less strong as his body and mind focused on the prospect of thousands of undead. He tried to think of something fitting to say to Ondel but all that ended up coming out of his mouth was "Sonofawhore we're don for..."

Karnin waited anxiously as the mighty doors opened up. he could feel the anxiety and the fear in the many soldiers that stood around him.

The doors had opened. Karnin rushed forward watching as the first volley of arrows had taken out around 30 undead.

" ahahaha!!! foul creatures!! back where ye came from" said Karnin taking out 2 undead with one mighty sweep of his sword. Karnin sheathed his sword and drew his axe and shield. 3 undead were coming at him. He bashed one with his shield cracking its skull and watching brain matter as it splattered everywhere then decapitated the next. Karnin turned around to hit the next but found it was already trying to sink its teeth into him. Karnin pushed it off then cut its leg off as it was falling he hit it in the head with his shield and watched in delight the massive blood splatter of the creature.

"ahh we shall defeat these foul creatures in no time" yelled Karnin turning to see a increasing number of unded coming towards the castle.

Ondel wobbled a bit as he teetered after Larius. Alas, tis possible I've drunken more than was wise, he thought for a moment before dismissing it with a belch.

"I like not this talk of barricading. Real men charge into battle willingly." He growled, slapping the flat end of his blade against his left palm.

"Well, you wanted to study our foemen, so kindly lead the way lest I become impatient for blood." He said to his brother, fighting hard against the ale to retain his senses.

Larius nodded towards his brother and started off towards the main gates. They were opened enough for people to enter and leave in a single-file order. Bloodshed was visible even through this small crack though. Bodies already littered the outside of the gates.

Spear in one hand, Larius steadily jogged towards the north gate with Ondel at his side and Abraham bringing up the read. They reached the north gate quickly and paused for a moment.
Larius drew his spear as he looked out into the pile of undead the waited out beyond the gate. There must've been half a thousand of them easily...

"Oh ho ho! The singers will compose many a ballad in honor of this!" Ondel laughed once he was able to discern their numbers.

"Well what are ye waiting for? Let's be away!" And so, he charged forward, spinning his mighty bastard sword as he ran.

OOC: Sorry for missing the start, will catch up.

Abraham rose from his stupor inside the bar.

"What, dur, what the hells going on."

Abraham spun around as the bar tender behind popped up from under the counter.

"Zombies are invading the town, run, hide, get the hell out of my bar."

The bartender then precede to beat Abraham out of the bar with a broom.

What the hells iz problem, little baby, Ohh, scary zombies, wait, are zombies the ones who hide under bridges or the undead ones that can turn other people to undead. I have to find Ondel, ah better yet find his brother

Abraham then stumbled around till he nearly bumped in Larius.

"Whats going on, why did no one wake me."

"The undead!" He yelled at Abraham who had just arrived.

Larius, holding his spear behind him, rushed out through the gates right behind his brother Ondel.
An undead came towards him from the right and he met it with a powerful spear thrust, impaling the vile creature through it's guts. As he looked to his left briefly he saw another getting in his range. In one fluid motion he forcefully withdrew his spear from the undead creature it was residing in, and shot out his well-armored left hand while turning. His left arm stuck the undead there and sent it reeling.
Larius took a step back towards the gate. His breathing now quicker.
4 undead saw him and made a mad dash towards him. A guard caught one in the neck with his broadsword, decapitating it. The remaining 3 closed in one Larius quickly. He readied his spear...

George sprinted at the horde, a blood rage engulfing him. Swinging his mighty hammer, he crushed three of the demons skulls in one swift motion. Holstering his hammer, he picked up a particularly ugly specimen, turned around, and threw it at three zombies, closing in on a spearmen from the tavern.

"Bahahaha!!" Ondel laughed as his blade caught the first one in the jaw, sheering off half it's face and sending it to the ground. A mighty stomp of his foot did the rest, reducing it's skull to something one might find in a meat grinder. Suddenly, he felt an ill wind at his neck. Spinning around, he buried his weapon in the torso of a zombie that hadd come within a rat's fart of biting a chunk out of his neck.

"Awful sneaky for dead folk!" He shouted to no one in particular as he wrenched his sword out, spilling his foe's guts in the process.

Abraham turned to see 3 of the monstrosity's closing on Larius, all of witch were nocked down by a man who picked up another zombie and threw it 20ft into the crowd of 3, quickly drawing his bow that was prestrung he notched an arrow and fire, taking one in the neck, and somehow managing to impale on in the foot and another arrow finished of the other.

All the affects off the booze where now gone.

"I will go up to the wall, to see what we are dealing with, Larius, be ready to pull your brother back if the numbers are to great, meet up at the church if we get separated."

Larius nodded towards the barbarish looking man who assisted him, and than turned to Abraham. "Very well Abraham. Try and keep us covered from up there!" He yelled at him.

Larius darted forward and tripped a zombie to the left of him with the back of his spear. He than brought one of his boots down roughly on the downed creature. He than ran over to his brother, who was doing quite well against the undead menace. Larius thrust his spear into the face of a nearby undead and ripped it out the side. He grabbed another by the hair and threw it the ground, before killing it easily with a downwards jab of his spear.

He stood facing away from Ondel's back.

"How are you faring, Ondel?" He said to him.

"A lot better than this one." He replied as he sliced through the neck of a zombie who'd been in a headlock a few instants prior. It had tried to nibble through his hauberk, but had accomplished little in that respect.

"I vote we find bigger fish to fry." Ondel grunted as he kicked a ghoul off of a downed soldier, and snapped it's spine with a downward thrust. "Oi, back on yer feet." He growled to the lucky soldier, who was now plainly crying... And soiling himself.

Abraham raced up the steps to the wall, conserving his arrows to shoot them at the undead who where not yet in the walls. As he neared the top and went to fire, he froze, as there was thousands of the monsters there.

"Larius, we must fall back, there are thousands of these things out there, we can never hope to take them all."

Abraham then went up higher on the wall and saw that the no one had turned over the oil drums onto the undead.

"Every one back away from the wall, I am turning over the oil drums, fire will halt them."

Larius skewered another undead, right through the throat, before rather violently ripping it out and sending the vile creature's blood splashing upon his armor. As the fighting had continued the evening had worn on. And before realising it, the moon was already out and darkness had set upon the the city. The losses of those fighting the undead threat was many. And no matter how many undeads fell it seemed there was always another wave that would come sprinting up.

It was a full moon tonight, and easy to see the blood everywhere as the moonlight lit up the scene.

A zombie clutched onto Larius' right shoulder. And before he had time to react it sunk it's teeth into his flesh.

"ARRG!!" Larius yelled out. Dropping his spear as his full armored glove hit the zombie in the temple with much force. It let go and dropped to the ground. Forgetting his spear, Larius leaned down and hit the zombie powerfully in the face several more times. His gauntlet became slick and dripping with blood as he stuck again and again.

He was broken out of his momentary berserk state by Abraham.


"Larius, we must fall back, there are thousands of these things out there, we can never hope to take them all." He yelled down from the wall.


Larius straightened up and grabbed his spear off the ground. 2 undead rushed his from the front and he slashed the throat of the first with a sideways swipe of his spear while tripping the second in a return motion. He flipped his spear upside down and shove down into the fallen zombie's chest to finish it off.


"Every one back away from the wall, I am turning over the oil drums, fire will halt them." Abraham shouted. Larius turned to his brother who seemed more caught up in the battle than he was.

"Ondel! You heard him, we must be on our way!"

"Har! But I was having so much fun!" Ondel complained as he stepped back from the fidgeting corpse he'd just impaled through the throat. With a twinge of disappointment, he retreated after his brother.

"What now," he asked, as he neared, "And how'd you go and get yourself bit?"

George sprinted through the horde, knocking them over mid-stride, as he heard a fellow yell, "Every one back away from the wall, I am turning over the oil drums, fire will halt them."

Looking around, he saw to fellows talking in the midst of the chaos. Jogging over, George said, "Bah! I have never seen this much bloodshed! It makes me feel at home!"

Abraham saw that his comrades and any of the guards who could backs away so he poured the oil on to the undead army bellow him, he then tossed a torch from the wall down into the mess, he was leaning over when he did this so he lost his eyebrows to the flame.

"Ah dammit all" he yelled as he stumbled down the steps.

"Where are you guys we need to find some place to hole up."

Larius rushed inside with his comrades beside him, as everyone got inside the walls and the fire sprang up over the undeads the gate caught aflame as well. Closing it was no longer in option.

"Where are you guys we need to find some place to hole up." Abraham said as he rushed down the stairs towards them.

"I was thinking the same thing. I think either the church or the tavern would be our best bet..." Larius said as he applied pressure to his still bleeding shoulder.
"Anyone got a damned bandage I can use!? I'm bleeding to death over here!" He complained.

George glanced at teh bleedign man, and tossed him a section of rope. "Here, tie yerself up. In the meantime, I reckon we should seek shelter in the church. The house of God will do well to defend our earthly bodies."
