Survivorman was airing before Man vs Wild...
and no, he isn't ex-millitary. He's just a Canadian guy who laughs in the face of the wilderness.
The difference between him and Bear Grills?
- No camera crew, Les Stroud sets up ALL of his scenic shots. which means a lot of walking back to cameras, and just generally carrying around 60+ lbs of gear the whole time.
- He stays out for a week. I think Bear Grylls only does 5 days.
- He actually goes out in the wilderness. Bear has been caught a few times filming his show in locations less than a mile from civilization.
- If he were to encounter serious danger, he could just be found dead when it comes time for him to be picked up. He usually has no link to the outside world. If Bear Grylls broke a leg, he'd be out of there before you can say 'phony"
- He's Canadian and says 'Aboot' sometimes. Also he has a lot of cool sleep-deprived monologues where he bitches about how cold it is.
- He has a beard sometimes
