| North Korea recently fired a few dozen artillery shells into a South Korean island, killing 2 South Korean marines and injuring 15 more.
South Korea responded with about 80 shells.
North Korea says it was because of South Korean training exercises, which happen every 3 months and sometimes put ammunition harmlessly into North Korean waters, though people or ships never cross the line.
Technically, North Korea and South Korea are still at war..
I'd like to hear Umbrella's opinion on this. | |

| In reality we, the USA is still at war with North Korea, we only signed an armistice not a peace treaty.
Its bad all around, we have 40k US military personnel there pledged to aid them in case of attack, most of them are looking down the barrels of rifles right now at the edge of the demilitarized zone, the NK have about a million on there side. If a full scale battle happens, in needs to be decided quickly what needs to happen, about 12 hours, whether we pull out, or send in reinforcements or every Marine/army grunt will be dead, and the South fallen.
Did I mention the North has any where from about 8 to 12 small nukes, its that bad.
Most likely action by UN will be to send the North a strongly worded letter, saying if they try it again, bad things will happen, and also we will send a few 100k pounds of grain as a good will gesture to feed their starving citizens. Next time something happens, the letter will be even more strongly worded.

| In truth, this was nothing new. North Korea has pulled stunts like this since the end of the Korean conflict whenever it needed something and nobody wanted to give it. Only thing different now is that the North has learned how to make Nukes, although they don't have the resources to make a lot of them or even very powerful ones. They're starving since the sanctions from the US and UN stopped a lot of food from going into the nation, and with a famine going on as well they're desperate. Also, this could be Kim Jong Un's first act as the heir appearent to leadership of the North and wants to show he holds the polices of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il to the rest of the world. Food is what is needed, and if they get some they will quiet down again. If they don't get it, they'll do something like this again or invade the South to try and raid food from it. | |
